چکیده

The effect of tannery wastewater on the biochemical constituents of fresh water bivalve, Lamellidens marginalis was studied. The acute toxicity study was carried out to determine lethal concentration. Bivalves were exposed to different sublethal concentrations of tannery wastewater for 10 and 20 days. The biochemical changes in the protein, glycogen, lactic acid and cholesterol, in the tissues like gills, hepatopancreas, gonads, muscle, mantle and foot were studied. Protein and glycogen content in all the tissues studied were significantly decreased at 0.5% and 2% concentration for 20 days and 2% concentration for 10 days exposure under stress conditions, whereas exposure at 0.5% concentration showed insignificant decrease in protein and glycogen contents. Lactic acid content was insignificantly increased while the cholesterol content was significantly decreased in all the tissues of exposed animals.

Habitat Dependent Variations in The Rate of Oxygen Consumption, Rate of Ammonia Excretion and O: N Ratio of Freshwater Bivalve, Lamellidens marginalis From Lotic and Lentic Water of Godavari River at Paithan, During Summer

Considering the site (habitat) specific variations in the metabolic activities in the freshwater bivalves, we reported here the changes in the rate of oxygen consumption, rate of ammonia excretion and O: N ratio in the freshwater bivalve mollusc, Lamellidens marginalis (Lamark) from lotic and lentic water habitats on April-May during summer season. The adult freshwater bivalves, Lamellidens mar...

Effect of chromium on protein metabolism of fresh water mussel, Lamellidens marginalis.

Effect of sub-lethal concentration of chromium was studied on the protein metabolism in adductor muscle, gill and mantle tissues of fresh water mussel, Lamellidens marginalis. Total proteins and RNA showed a decrease while free amino acids and protease activity showed an increase. Alanine and Aspartate aminotransferase activities showed an increase, while GDH activity showed a decrease. It may ...

Role of Cerebral Ganglia in Regulation of Oxygen Consumption of Freshwater Bivalve Mollusc, Indonaia Caeruleus (prashad, 1918) from Godavari River during Summer

Many exogenous factors (temperature, salinity, pH, light, oxygen tension, turbidity etc.) affect the rate of oxygen consumption in bivalve molluscs (Bayne, 1976; Samant and Agrawal, 1978). Most of the vital activities in bivalves are regulated by neuroendocrine centers. The respiratory rate data of the animals reflect their general metabolic rate. The existence of neuroendocrine modulations of ...

Effect of tannery waste water on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme activity of fresh water fish, Channa punctatus

Channa punctatus is the most common fish found in Indian rivers and water bodies. The present study was conducted to investigate the dilution effect of tannery waste water on the activity of serum LDH enzyme of the Indian freshwater fish Channa punctatus. The effect was observed based on the result of chronic toxicity and comparison of control with experimental groups. Tannery wastewater causes...
